What is accountability software, how is it different from filters?

Filtering software blocks specified content from your computer. Accountability Software may or may not also filter content, but its primary purpose is to monitor your internet browsing and send reports to your accountability partner. Some only report questionable access, some send immediate alerts and others just send a general report.

The idea behind accountability software isn’t to just police your internet use, but to build a relationship with your partner so you can help each other and do not have to deal with temptation alone.

Using Accountability Software requires a strong relationship and trust between partners.

For example, the software listed on the filters page – Qustodio, MobiCip, and Canopy – are also designed to act as family accountability software. The parent has a version of the application that receives reports about the children’s internet use, reporting when questionable material is accessed, and in some cases, how much time is spent online, and what applications run on the child’s device. These same programs can also be used together by adults for accountability.

There are also other programs that are designed specifically to be used by adult accountability partners.
