What is the Southeastern Conference’s guidance for use of the internet?

Statement of Faith of the Southeastern Mennonite Conference: Rules and Discipline

Part II: The Christian Life

8. Video, Computer, and Other Electronic Programs and Devices

We believe that such programs and devices have some legitimate uses in areas of business and instruction. However, we are in a spiritual warfare and God holds us accountable as stewards of our minds, our time, and our finances. We therefore ask our members to refrain from sensual or frivolous use and to limit the uses of such devices and technology to those which enhance the kingdom of God and do not conflict with Biblical principles or Conference guidelines. We ask our members to refrain from the possession or use of commercial movies in any format; defining these as any acted-out production with a story line and plot. Members who use the internet shall use filters and passwords or other security measures whenever possible to prevent accessing sensual sites and to protect others from unauthorized use. We ask those who use the internet to file a pledge or affirmation of accountibility with their ministry which reads as follows:

I commit myself to an active, open, mutually accountable relationship with my church family, and specifically with one or more members, including one of my congregation’s ministerial team, regarding my use of the internet.

The following Scriptures offer basic guidelines for decision making with regard to the above:

I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.

Romans 16:19b

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31

It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.

Romans 14:21

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:21-23
